Letters on L.B. 921 Needed Now!
We are closer than ever to banning the sale and
possession of shark fins in Nebraska, and you have an opportunity to help pass
this important piece of legislation! L.B.
921, introduced by Senator Jeremy Nordquist (Non-partisan – 7), would
outlaw the commercialization and ownership of shark fins in Nebraska. It is scheduled to
have a hearing in the Judiciary Committee this Friday, January 31, so we need
you to speak out now in
support of this crucial bill.
Shark finning is a particularly cruel practice in which
people cut the fins off a live shark and discard the body into the water, where
the shark inevitably dies. The animals who are cast back suffer slow, painful
deaths by drowning or blood loss. This bill is relevant to a landlocked state
like Nebraska because shark fins are most often used in shark fin soup, an
Asian delicacy. Traders and consumers of this dish reside in nearly every state,
even far from the coast.
Additionally, a conservation crisis of this scale
mandates a widespread response. Shark finning does not threaten just a few
sharks, but 73 million sharks each year worldwide. Many of these animals are
endangered species. However, as more
states in the U.S. pass bans on shark finning, the threat to shark populations is
reduced. All compassionate Nebraska citizens should contact the
members of this committee and urge them to vote in favor of L.B.
921 at the hearing.
Thank you for taking a stand against this horrific
practice and for working toward a ban on shark fins in Nebraska.
For the animals,
