Help Us Care for Mistreated Baby Chimp, Chinoise

Dear Friend,

Chinoise, an infant chimpanzee, spent the first 13 months of her life tied up at a Chinese restaurant in Douala, Cameroon, used as a photo “prop” when she wasn’t abandoned and all alone. It’s very likely that she witnessed the death of her mother, later sold as bushmeat, while she was sold into the “pet” trade.

Upon learning of her terrible situation, a strong community of animal protection organizations sprang into action. The Limbe Wildlife Centre in Cameroon, supported by Born Free, agreed to accept the orphan; the Last Great Ape Organization provided law-enforcement support; and the veterinary team from Pandrillus collected and transported Chinoise to Limbe after she was confiscated by Cameroon’s Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife on January 17. Now, Born Free USA needs your help to raise the funds for her care. Will you make a donation today to provide Chinoise with milk, bottles, and the medications she needs?

Chinoise has found comfort at Limbe. She is being closely monitored by veterinarians, as she suffers from a fever, infection, and swollen liver, most likely due to frequently being given alcohol to drink. She is a very quiet baby, rarely crying or making noise, but has a big personality and is always sure to tell her caretakers what she wants. Once she passes the quarantine period and grows stronger, Chinoise will be introduced to the nursery chimpanzee group at Limbe, where she will have the companionship of other chimpanzees.

This rescue was only possible through the cooperation of many individuals—and we need your help, too. Please make a contribution to give Chinoise the life that she deserves. We need to raise $1,260 to cover the costs of her rescue, veterinary care, medications for her liver, and the formula, infant cereals, and bottles she needs in these critical first three months at the sanctuary.

Thank you for helping give baby Chinoise all that she needs to be a chimpanzee once again.

For the animals,
